Once we have engaged with a family, we have moved toward providing relational care1 (as opposed to transactional care) and toward providing support and psychological safety. As we discuss earlier in the book, it is within relationships that resilience is built and recovery from trauma happens, including the relationships we have with families. Those relationships create the safe space and support needed for resilience and healing. This is the groundwork; on this foundation, we can move forward to do some of the challenging work of evaluating the problem and diagnosing what is going on.
