Gonococcal infections demonstrate a spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic carriage, to characteristic localized infections (usually mucosal), to disseminated disease, and should be considered in 3 distinct age-groups: newborns, prepubertal children, and postpubertal sexually active adolescents and young adults. Multiple sites of infection can occur simultaneously in one individual.
