Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is caused by infection with the filarial parasites Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, or Brugia timori. Adult worms cause lymphatic dilatation and dysfunction, which result in abnormal lymph flow and may eventually lead to lymphedema in the legs, scrotal area (only for W bancrofti), and arms. Recurrent secondary bacterial infections hasten progression of lymphedema to the more severe form known as elephantiasis. Although the infection occurs commonly in young children living in areas with endemic LF, chronic manifestations of infection, such as hydrocele and lymphedema, occur infrequently in people younger than 20 years.
