Clinical disease is caused by parasitic nematode larval migration through tissues. Signs and symptoms differ depending on the affected organ and host inflammatory response. Toxocariasis can be of the following types: covert toxocariasis, visceral larval migrans, neurotoxocariasis, or ocular larval migrans. Most infected children are asymptomatic. Covert disease most often manifests with simple, persistent eosinophilia and may be attributed to the continuation of the migratory phase, which may last for many years. Symptoms of visceral toxocariasis include fever, cough, wheezing, abdominal pain, and malaise and may uncommonly include myocarditis and rash.
