Four new Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System modifiers have been developed to support reporting services based on changes introduced in Medicare policy for 2022.
A brief description follows the Medicare payment policies associated with each of the new modifiers. Some things to note about these modifiers and related policies include
Modifier FQ is specific to expanded Medicare coverage of telehealth for mental health services furnished to a beneficiary in their home using audio-only communications technology. This modifier and the related payment policy do not apply to services for conditions other than mental health or an SUD. E/M services addressing diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of mental health and/or an SUD are reported with modifier FQ, when applicable.
