By now, most physicians, other qualified health care professionals (QHPs), and coders should be aware of the upcoming 2023 changes to the codes and guidelines for many E/M services. Specifically, beginning with services provided on January 1, 2023, and thereafter, all codes for services currently reported based on key components or typical time spent face-to-face or on the unit/floor will be revised, as will be the guidelines for code selection. See prior issues of this newsletter for articles describing code selection based on medical decision-making (MDM) or the physician’s or QHP’s total time directed to the patient on the date of the encounter.
