During the past 25 years, outpatient (ambulatory) anesthesia and surgery have revolutionized the way surgery and anesthesia are practiced in North America.1 Safe, reliable, inexpensive, and convenient outpatient surgery is an attractive option for parents, children, their physicians, and perhaps most importantly, their insurers. Surgical procedures that routinely required 1 or 2 days of preadmission hospitalization and 1 to 7 days of postoperative recuperation are now commonly performed without any inpatient hospitalization at all.
