Polyuria, or excessive urinary volume, is a symptom common to many pediatric disorders. It may be defined clinically as urine production of more than 2 L/m2/24 hours or functionally as inappropriately high urine output relative to circulating volume and osmolality1 (Table 182-1). Although polyuria is often associated with polydipsia, frequent urination, and nocturia, these features may occur with normal urine output. Differentiating polyuria from other conditions depends on total urine output.
